Ignacio Sánchez is Professor of the Faculty of Medicine of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (UC, for its initials in Spanish). He completed his medical studies at UC, and then specialized in Pediatrics at the same institution, and in Pediatric Respirology at the University of Manitoba, Canada.
He was appointed Provost of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in 2010. Then, in 2015, he was confirmed for a second term, and on January 15, 2020, he was confirmed by the Grand Chancellery for a third term as Provost.
His academic and research work has been mainly focused on the study of cystic fibrosis, asthma and pulmonary function in children, areas in which he has published the book, Enfoque Clinico de Enfermedades Respiratorias del Niño (Clinical Insight on Children’s Respiratory Diseases), and an extensive number of scientific articles in international journals. He is also co-editor of the book, Meneghello Pediatría (Meneghello Pediatrics), the leading Spanish-language pediatrics publication. In recent years, he has also published a series of books on higher education and numerous articles on the subject in specialized journals in Chile and abroad, and is frequently invited to speak at the most important forums on education.
He chairs the Chilean Chapter of Catholic Universities. He is a member of the Council of Provosts of Chilean Universities – CRUCh (for its initials in Spanish). In the past, he chaired the Network of Non-State Public Universities – G9. Internationally, he is a member of the Academic Advisory Board of the Oxford University School of Government, Vice President of the Hemispheric University Consortium and South American Vice President for the Executive Committee of the International Association of University Presidents – IAUP.
